Inimõiguste Nõukogu 35. sessioon

Intervention by ESTONIA

Item 4 – Report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in MYANMAR

Genf, 15 juuni 2017

Mr. President,

Distinguished Special Rapporteur,

Estonia fully aligns itself with the statement made by the EU.

We would like to thank the Special Rapporteur for her oral update on the situation of human rights in Myanmar.

We note the efforts of the Government of Myanmar, headed by Aung San Suu Kyi, for national reconciliation and reforms for the country’s democratic transition. However, we remain concerned about the slow pace of the reforms. We reiterate our worries about the ongoing conflict in parts of the country and reports of violations of international human rights and humanitarian law. Estonia remains, in particular, concerned about the situation of the members of Myanmar’s Rohingya community in the Rakhine state, and about those who have been displaced and thus face the risk of being re-victimized. Furthermore, we call the government to provide full access to the international humanitarian organizations to vulnerable people in Rakhine state who are in need vital humanitarian assistance.

Mr President,

We welcome the creation of the independent international fact-finding mission on Myanmar at the Human Rights Council 34th session. We wish its members success in fulfilling the mandate. We encourage the Government of Myanmar to cooperate fully with the fact-finding mission, including making available the findings of the domestic investigation and other relevant information, and granting the mission full and unrestricted access to all areas. Cooperation with the mission will assist the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and holding those responsible for human rights violations accountable.

Thank you.
